Spencer Pigot Clinches USF2000 Cooper Tires Winterfest Championship
February 12, 2012
Spencer Pigot kicked off his 2012 racing season in style this week by clinching the six-race Cooper Tires USF2000 Winterfest Championship. The rising American star claimed two wins on Monday and Tuesday at Sebring International Raceway, then proceeded to sweep all three races this weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway, each of them from the pole with fastest race lap, to earn a maximum possible 99-point haul and secure the title with one race remaining.
Pigot, 18, from Orlando, Fla., qualified Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing's #2 Team Pelfrey/E-merging Technologies/Parathyroid.com/California Scents/Mazda/Cooper Tires Van Diemen (pictured above at Sebring) comfortably on pole position at both venues, using the experience he gained from last season to excellent effect. In addition to his five wins, Pigot also claimed one second-place finish to secure the title by a margin of 187 points to 140 over his teammate Trent Hindman.
"It feels good," said Pigot. "We came close in the winter series and the main series last year, finished second in both, so the goal is to win them both this year. We got the first one done, so now it's time to go out and try and get the big one.
"The Cooper Tires Winterfest has been great for me in so many ways. The competition has been really strong, with 20 cars showing up at Sebring. It's only my second weekend with the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team, so we're still getting used to each other. I think we're improving every weekend, so it's going well.
"Being with (teammates) Trent and Matt (Brabham) has been really good. They're both fast so we're going to push each other and learn from each other as well. It's good to have two really fast guys and we're getting along really well so it's a really good environment under the tent.
"It's great to have some momentum. To get five out of the six wins, that's really good for me, for my confidence, for the team, for everyone, so now we've got to go out and live up to it and do it all again in the regular season."
Pigot would like to thank Team Pelfrey, E-merging Technologies, Paraythyroid.com, California Scents, Mazda and Cooper Tires as well as his team, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, for making it possible for him to compete this season. His next race will be the opening round of the "regular season" Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda in support of the 60th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring at Sebring International Raceway, Fla., on March 15-16.
